All the best things in life just does't come free, but in leaps and bounds of surprises, too. But keeping it a surprise is where the challenge lies. In tradition, the gentleman is the one who buys the right-sized ring for the lady. Asking her for her ring size is not an option as that would ruin the surprise. She will get an inkling as to what you're up to.

1. Does your special woman sleep deeply? You are just so fortunate. Measure the circumference of her left ring finger when she is in dreamland. Have a penlight or a small flashlight ready; you would want to see the numbers in the dark. Do it really gently because the slightest movement may be enough to wake her up.
2. Take your cue from her existing rings. If she usually wears a ring on her other hand (referring to the right hand), most likely, the ring finger on that hand is 1 to 2 sizes larger than the real ring finger (referring to the left hand). If you notice that she wears her rings on the left, then get the exact same size. This however, means you having to go through her jewellery box. Bring one of her rings to your jeweller to have it measured; just make sure to put it back before she reports it stolen.
3. Take her out looking around before the big night. You can shop for anything such as groceries, clothes, or gadgets; but be sure you stop at a jewellery store. Shop for her a cheap ring. She may ask if there's a special reason why you're buying her a ring. Just tell her that the piece you are buying is a "love" ring that represents your feelings for her. As she fits the ring, take note of the size until she comes to the right-sized ring. Observe this so that when you buy her the real engagement ring, you'll have a reference of her size.
4. You may need other people to help you out. You can approach one of her family members or closest friends so you will have an idea of your lady's correct ring size. Probably, her best friend, parent, relative, or brother or sister would have an idea of her finger size when they bought her a ring for her birthday or graduation. Most likely, your lady won't become suspicious. After all, there's no reason she should suspect something out of the ordinary from a family member or a best friend.
